Why Study Buddhism?:

The Practitioners' Journey Through the Three Steps of Learning, Contemplating, and Meditating. A Collection of KIBI Talks on the Why & How of Dharma Education

Cover description: The talks in this collection all address the subject of study within the context of the Buddhist path, shedding light on this aspect, known as the Wisdom of Learning or Hearing, from different angles. While the overall emphasis is on its importance, each talk highlights specific aspects of the method of study. Thus, both the relative beginner and the more advanced practitioner will benefit, as the talks provide both a means to dispel any possible doubts, as well as serving as a source of inspiration to keep one’s motivation fresh and high. Moreover, the practical advice on how to actually approach study on a day-to-day basis, and how to successfully merge study with practice, thoroughly guides dharma students to make the highest use of their time and energy, making it profoundly meaningful. On a side note, though engaging in Buddhist studies is always beneficial, the reader will also come to know the specific qualities and special blessings of studying at Karmapa International Buddhist Institute. A Lamp Illuminating the Twofold Meaning: A Commentary on Gelongma Palmo's Ver-ses of Praise to Noble Avalokitesvara (po bstod)

Author: Prof. Sempa Dorje Original Title: dge slong ma dpal mos mdzad pa’i ‘phags pa spyan ras gzigs kyi (po bstod) bstod pa’i ‘grel ba don gnyis gsal sgron Cover description: Gelongma Palmo lost both hands up to her wrists while suffering from leprosy. She endured many intense physical and mental hardships, living in great difficult conditions and deprivation in the forest. Obeying a prediction, she committed herself to practice, with the absolute faith that Chenrezig was in himself the united essence of the Root Lama and the Three Jewels, and henceforth remained on a single seat, alternating Nyen-né with the fasting of Nyung-né; from then on she spent all her time practicing, going through painful ordeals. After a year, she completely recovered from her illness and many different samādhis arose in her mind. She thus gradually reached the stage of realization of the Noble Chenrezig and finally met face to face with the Noble Great-Compassion himself. This commentary demonstrates and elucidates in an intelligible way the clear significance of the terms of the praise. This book will therefore prove to be of great relevance to all those who recite this praise in the context of their spiritual practice, enabling them to form a conviction about the sacred origin of this particular prayer and the greatness of its benefits. It will help them to develop a full faith in it. It will also be useful to all those who wish to study it, as an authentic starting point of reference, leading to future research. This commentary will thus serve as a magnificent precious jewel with which we can adorn ourselves. Language: English Karmapa SERIES no.: 4 Category: Sadhana, Chenrezig

Living Through Life's Turbulences: Thoughts & Reflections

Author: Trinley Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Cover description: Throughout the past few years, the entire global population has seen various tragedies, both natural as well as man-made. From the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 to wars in the Ukraine and other regions, from frequent natural disasters to devastating accidents, probably each person at some point had to go through experiences of anxiety, fear, loss, and pain. During these particularly challenging times, Trinley Thaye Dorje, His Holiness the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, on a regular basis shared some of his thoughts and reflections with regards to the situation at hand. Absolutely unique in their presentation and often poetic in style, recurring themes are karma–or, to be more precise, owning one’s own karma–and the changing nature of life, as well as the development of compassion. These reflections have indeed been a limitless source of genuine support, reminder, and encouragement – support in facing such seemingly unremitting catastrophes; reminder that, as Dharma practitioners, we do have methods at hand to deal with whatever experience arises, no matter how difficult it may seem; and encouragement to apply these methods, the most precious teachings of the Buddha Dharma, and thereby actually live through–instead of merely surviving–what one might call these tragedies of life. A Rain of Compassion:

A Commentary on the 5th Shamarpa Kon-chok Yenlak's A Concise Lojong Manual

Author: Ven. Lama Jampa Thaye Cover description: The very heart of mahayana Buddhism is bodhicitta, Awakening Mind: the genuine wish to awaken into perfect buddhahood to be able to show other beings the way to freedom from suffering. Endowed with measureless qualities, bodhicitta’s primary characteristics as well as foundation are great compassion and wisdom. To provide the practitioner with the required set of methods for developing one’s innate qualities, one of the key tools is the lojong, translated into English as Mind Training or Mind Transformation. Lama Jampa Thaye explains that the “essential characteristic of the lojong teachings is that they enable relatively unlearned people to access the teachings which can carry us along the mahayana path to buddhahood, since they are concerned with direct transformation of our ordinary habits of self-clinging and self-cherishing. As we are all affected by such negative states of mind, one might say that we are all, whether learned or not, qualified to begin practising lojong.” A Rain of Compassion contains the teachings Ven. Lama Jampa Thaye gave during the Karmapa Public Course 2015 at KIBI, New Delhi, expounding on the Fifth Shamarpa Könchok Yenlak’s A Concise Lojong Manual. Conveying these traditional teachings in a manner easily relateable for occidental students, his profound, crystal-clear elucidations enable the practitioner to both deepen their understanding of the meaning as well as help them in their practice of application.
